What is TMDA?
Tagged Message Delivery Agent (TMDA).
TMDA is an open source software application designed to significantly reduce the amount of spam
(Internet junk-mail) you receive. TMDA strives to be more effective, yet less time-consuming than
traditional spam filters. The project for you technical savvy is located at SourceForge
The technical countermeasures used by TMDA to thwart spam include:
- whitelists: accept mail from known, trusted senders.
- blacklists: refuse mail from undesired senders.
- challenge/response: allows unknown senders which aren't on the whitelist or blacklist the chance to confirm that their message is legitimate (non-spam).
- tagged addresses: special-purpose e-mail addresses such as time-dependent addresses, or addresses which only accept certain kinds of communication. These increase the transparency of TMDA for unknown senders by allowing them to safely circumvent the challenge/response system.
What is a Whitelist?
In the e-mail world, a whitelist is a collection of e-mail addresses that are safe to communicate with. The practice of
whitelisting is to place a name, e-mail address, Web site address, or program on a list of items that are deemed
spam or virus-free.
What is a Blacklist?
Simply put a blacklist is a address book filled with e-mail senders you wish not to view, read or
otherwise waste your precious time considering their communications.
The noun black list (or blacklist), a list of people or things that are deemed unsafe or undesirable,
has been in the language since the early 1600s. The verb form (meaning to place on a black list)
first showed up in the early 1700s. The verb form blacklisted (to place someone or something on a
list of things deemed unsafe or unacceptable) has been around since about the mid-70s.
The specific sense of placing items on a list of things known be spam or viruses first
started appearing in Usenet posts around 1996, although, as the earliest
citation shows, the verb didn't make it into the media until 2001.
What is the maximum size file attachment I can send?
You can send a file attachment equal in size to your mailbox. For example, with a 50 MB e-mail account you
can send attachments up to 50 MB in size. The absolute maximum size of a message, including all attachments,
is 100MB. We do, however, recommend that you not send large attachments ( greater then 10 MB ) via email. We
say this because most e-mail accounts on the receiving end of your message will either not accept large
attachments or they will completely irritate the recipient if he has a slow connection.
Furthermore, our solution provides an easy mechanism for you to share your files to guests via
the built in file manager. You can upload large files and provide a guest with their very own username and
password to view, edit, or delete your shared data.
What does "Protect my address so only the recipient of this mail can reply to it" do for me?
To use this option, you must have TMDA "junk mail protection" enabled. TMDA can tag your messages
with an encrypted ?Reply-To? address that only a certain sender can use. This feature is often
used to subscribe to mailing lists.
It is important to note that the e-mail address that you have configured as your default
profile in the Safe Address Office Suite is always used as the ?From:? address. However, with TMDA
?junk mail protection? enabled, recipients will not be able to reply unless they
confirm themselves; are on your white list; or if you use one of the strategies described above.
